If you’re thinking of getting something framed, then read this carefully.  We’ve put together a list of common mistakes that we’ve seen when re-framing customer work.

This will be useful if you’re a picture framer, if you enjoy doing DIY picture framing or if you’re planning to get something framed by your local framer.

Remember, these are the mistakes, avoid them if at all possible. Read the rest of this entry »

***Feel free to send a CV for future vacancies ***

We’re now looking for a Junior Picture Framer to work in the framing workshop in Hazel Grove, Stockport.

Experience working as a picture framer is not a requirement, as we will train the successful applicant to Fine Art Trade Guild standards.

This job is ideal for a school leaver who would like a career in picture framing, is hard working and will get on well with our existing framing team.

lazy_daisy_1A huge number of out customers come to us with their needlework to be framed.

We’re always very careful with peoples work, but perhaps more so with needlework.  We understand that it takes a very long time to create a tapestry, some silk work, or creative embroidery.  And some of you will know that when we started out as Lazy Daisies, most of the shop was dedicated to needlework (hence the name ‘Lazy Daisies’, which is a type of creative embroidery stitch).

We used to lace embroideries, but nowadays we prepare the acid free board with plastic strips with little spikes around the outside edges, we then use Polyester wadding to pad the surface of the board (this gives the finished embroidery a softer 3D finish, hiding any bumps or knots which lie under the surface of the fabric).

We always advise that you keep the fabric away from the surface of the glass, so using spacing (shadow box effect), a slip frame, or a double mount (this gives a space for any moisture to evapourate and reduces the chances that your work will grow mould).

If you’re ambitious, you can finish your work off yourself, so that it’s ready for mounting and framing – this guide is quite useful: Finishing your embroidery

But be very careful if you plan on washing your work – we never wash customers’ work because we have no idea whether all of the threads you have used are colourfast… so it’s not worth the risk.

If you fancy getting started on a Cross Stitch but want some guidance – Stitchtastic offers stitchers the opportunity to stitch ’something a bit different’. The range includes over 700 unique and exclusive counted cross stitch designs with something for everyone. Includes a wide range of transport designs, over 100 caricature designs and an expanding range of nature designs.

And if you would just like some more information on framing your embroidery or needlework, then please contact us or pop in to the shop.

contemporary-artI have to share this, I noticed it on a wander around the Internet.

Kevin is an artist with character, and among other things, he produces some very quirky artwork.

You can see some of his other work here: Bearskinrug

There is a band called ‘Picture Frame Seduction’… they seem like a friendly bunch.
So this is my Monday morning listening:

Valentines Day Presents

What should you get for your other half?
Well, we’ve got some romantic art and presents in the gallery to help you get ready for Valentines Day.

But perhaps you want to make a special tribute – you could frame the cinema ticket from your first date, your wedding flowers, your baby’s christening outfit, or a collection of your favourite photos of the two of you…

Frame Baby's Clothes

In the example to the left, we’ve framed a picture of baby, her dress and shoes and cut out some letters (which could be baby’s name), and presented the selection in a spaced frame with a triple mount.

On the other hand, you might want to get something practical…

Practical Present...

At the warehouse, we have a computerised box cutter so we can create white custom fit boxes for each of our framing jobs. This gives a professional finish, but also protects the frame in transit.

Here’s an example of how the finished box looks:

And here’s what our box cutter looks like… well, I couldn’t find a picture of Claire, so here’s the computerised box cutter!

We do framing for photographers, and the finished photo, framed and boxed looks much better than handing people a folder of photos.

Christy’s been creative again with her mounts. Here’s an example of one of her cut outs.
This shape was chosen because the set of cross stitch embroideries were in the style of Rennie Mackintosh.

Well… it was a very cold day, but we managed to please a few people.

Florence Coates won the prize draw for £100 to spend in store… and rather than the raffle that we had anticipated, she won at the toss of a coin!

It just shows that you have got a great chance to win in local events.

£100 voucher for picture framing in the Marple shop
There was 20% off framing and all open edition prints in store, and Jane Forster was in with her hand made cards at a special launch day price of £3.50. Jane’s cards are still available in the Marple shop for £3.95.

I’m pleased to say that Tony Gallagher is now North West Master Of The Fine Art Trade Guild.

The Fine Art Trade Guild is the association that represents the art and framing industry. It promotes best practices, and helps inform members, so we can all improve.

Tony Gallagher - North West Master Of The Fine Art Trade Guild

The vote was made on Thursday night (20th November 2008) by the North West members.

Tony was happy to be voted in, commenting that “I’m surprised and pleased, I’d like to make it a social meeting, with an art topic where members can share their experience and abilities, and showcase their work”.

“If we all use the abilities of other members, we can push forward the Industry, creating a higher standard of work.”

The post involves organising member meetings in the North West over the year, being the interface between the members and the board.
